Student Instructions

What to Bring

You will need to present the following items at test time:

  • Picture ID: driver’s license or passport

What Not to Bring

Because this is a practical exam, you will not need the following items:

  • Reference books
  • Notes
  • Pencils, pens, or paper
  • Calculator

What to Expect

First, you will be asked to complete the candidate information section that provides the information necessary to complete your MOS certificate.  After confirming your identification, the administrator will seat you at the test computer, log you onto the test system, and open your test module.  You will then be ready to begin.  The test will not begin until you click the "Start" button.

The test itself is a "real-world" type of exam designed to measure your ability to solve problems using the tools available in a particular Microsoft Office application. It is not a multiple-choice or "question/answer" type of exam.

  • Read the test instructions carefully.  Once you have started, the instruction box will indicate the question with which you are currently working. (e.g., question 3 of 50)
  • A typical exam has a time limit of 45-60 minutes. You will not receive credit for tasks that are completed after your time expires.
  • Instructions are displayed in a separate window.
  • Your score will be based only on the tasks you are asked to complete.  Doing anything more or less than the assigned task may cause you to miss the question.
  • Because MOS examinations run within live Microsoft Office applications, if anything abnormal happens during the exam (toolbars disappear, sub-menus not available, or if the application "crashes" by mistake) stop and contact the administrator.  The administrator will restart the test from where you left off.
  • You will be notified on-screen whether you passed or failed the exam.
  • The administrator will give you a printed report.
  • If you complete the exam successfully your MOS certificate will be delivered within 2-3 weeks.
